A Legacy of Conservation & Research Support
AFA has a long history of funding medical, husbandry, and conservation research. Past support has included projects designed to better understand, manage, and protect endangered species, improve avian care, and support the long-term survival, health, and genetic diversity of parrots and other birds.
AFA-supported work has included projects involving Scarlet Macaws, Lear’s Macaws, Mexican Amazons, Puerto Rican Parrots, Red-fronted Macaws, Spix’s Macaws, Bahama Parrots, Cape Parrots, Yellow-shouldered Amazons, Great Green Macaws, and other psittacine species.

A Broader History of Avian Research
AFA-supported conservation grants have also helped advance knowledge related to Bahama Parrot breeding biology, Cape Parrot conservation, Yellow-shouldered Amazon ecology, hurricane impacts on psittacine populations, macaw conservation in Central America, Puerto Rican Parrot genetics, Great Green Macaw movement tracking, and other important avian studies.
In addition, AFA’s history includes support for more than 40 medical avian research grants awarded between 1982 and 1993.

Conservation is not limited to one place or one method. It includes field research, habitat awareness, responsible breeding, cooperative population management, veterinary science, education, and public engagement.
